The animal below is a “street bull” who was struggling to walk with hooves that were so horribly overgrown, they resembled skis. If you can imagine having scuba fins permanently attached to your feet and then add the pain of hooves growing unchecked, you might have an idea of what every day was like for this bull, who was forced to lift his legs unusually high with each step in order to keep from stumbling.
An Animal Rahat team spotted him and recruited a pair of local farriers. The bull was suspicious of people, so the task required several steps: 1) give him some tasty groundnut cake to gain his trust, 2) try to inject him with a sedative, 3) sigh as he jumps away after only a small dose of the drug gets into his bloodstream, 4) follow him patiently as he walks for 45 minutes, 5) manage to give another sedative injection, 6) follow him patiently for another 20 minutes, 7) inject him a third time, 8) feel relief as he finally reclines, 9) let the farriers trim his hooves, and 10) wait until the sedative wears off and be glad that he can now walk normally again.
