A street-smart village dog in Chandur, Ichalkaranji, was no match for an abandoned well that had become covered by brush. In he tumbled and down he went, but miraculously, he wasn’t seriously injured by the fall. Although he was without food, the bottom of the old well still had a bit of water that he could drink while stuck there, plaintively crying for help. Someone passing by finally heard his distressed howling and called Animal Rahat. The rescue team rushed to the scene and, seeing that the well was too dilapidated for rappelling into, hauled him out of that horrible place. When he could plant his feet on solid ground once again, rescuers whisked him off to their nearest shelter, where he spent two weeks gaining weight, receiving vaccines and vitamins, and relishing no small amount of attention. Once he was healthy and strong, they gave him a ride back to his neighborhood and placed him in the care of a local volunteer—who promised he’d be fed regularly and be under a watchful eye.
