The temporary sanctuary in Kolkata is helping horses recover from a lifetime of neglect and abuse.

PETA India’s work to end the cruel horse-drawn carriage industry in Kolkata inspired Animal Rahat to provide a new, temporary sanctuary for horses who have escaped such a life. Most of them have horrendous wounds and are gravely underweight. Their gaunt frames and dull coats are a shocking sight. The team leased green pastures and put up fences, and Animal Rahat’s experienced staff ensure the horses’ hooves are tended to and that they get much-needed veterinary care. Once they’re well, staff will transport them to the Gundlupet sanctuary.
