Animal Rahat is hoping to retire 75 donkeys from five brick kilns very soon. Donkeys used at kilns spend all day carrying enormous stacks of bricks on their backs and suffer from wounds, injuries, diseases, dehydration, and exhaustion. Animal Rahat recently added five more kilns to its list of those that have decided to use tractors instead of animals. Trolleys for the bricks are currently being manufactured, and when those are ready, the organization will transport the donkeys to its partner sanctuary in the Nilgiri Hills—where they’ll never again have to haul so much as a pebble.
In the meantime, Animal Rahat helps improve working donkeys’ lives by providing them with needed medical treatment and conducting workshops on proper care. Below, an owner is learning how to groom his donkey.
