The dairy farm pictured below is undergoing major improvements at Animal Rahat’s behest. Prior to the group’s involvement, these cows were tethered 24 hours a day—able to take only a few steps in any direction. Animal Rahat introduced the owner to the concept of “mukta gotha” (which translates roughly to “loose housing”). After a trial period, during which the cows were allowed to be untethered for a few hours each day, the owner agreed to keep them permanently untethered. Hurray!

Animal Rahat also worked with the owner to install better water tanks and build a shed to protect the cows from the elements. Next up is persuading him to remove their painful nose ropes. It’s a slow process, but by gradually encouraging him to make vital improvements, Animal Rahat will be able to use his farm as an example to urge other dairy farmers to improve conditions for their cows.
