“Bilateral tethering” (shown below) is a cruel practice in which animals are tied by both sides of their heads. They can’t even turn to scratch an itch or groom themselves—sometimes they have only a few inches of maneuverability.
This lousy practice also increases their fear and sense of vulnerability because if they hear a noise behind them, not only can they not move away, they also can’t even turn around to see what it is. For prey animals like equines and bovines, this is extremely upsetting.
Animal Rahat is fully committed to stopping this awful practice, and through outreach meetings, the team is persuading more and more bullock owners to use one-sided tying instead. Last month, 47 owners pledged to make the switch, a seemingly small change, but to each individual animal, it’s an enormous improvement.
