This year during sugarcane season, Animal Rahat was able to crack down on even more abuse and inspire more owners to commit to mechanizing their factories.
The most significant law-enforcement drive of the season took place recently at a factory in Jarendeshwar. There, police officers filed 28 citations for illegal offenses, including beatings, overloaded carts, the use of more than one nose rope, and withholding rest and water from overworked and overheated bullocks.
One bullock owner, pictured above, was arrested for forcing his bullock to work while ill with yoke gall.
Animal Rahat promotes the replacement of bullocks with tractors or trucks, as removing them from the sugarcane industry entirely is the only sure way to end abuse. So it was a win for bullocks when, after meeting with Animal Rahat, the Jarendeshwar factory’s management agreed in writing that next season its facility will be completely bullock-free.
