Welcome home, Mukesh, Akash, and Anant!

Animal Rahat staff knew Mukesh, Akash, and Anant well. They had tended to their illnesses and injuries when the bullocks hauled heavy loads of ice through Mumbai’s chaotic streets amid horns blowing and every manner of vehicle imaginable missing them by inches. Exhaustion, dehydration, and hunger were the hallmarks of their existence, and “rest” meant a few moments on an unforgiving cement slab as the cart stopped to make a delivery. But thanks to friends at PETA India and their mechanization project, these three gentlemen have traded long nights on the road for long days lounging in the soft grass at the Sangli sanctuary. Veterinarians gently removed the nose ropes that had pulled at—and even torn—their sensitive septa for so long. Life for them will only improve as they realize that good food is always there for them and that they’ll receive excellent, gentle care from the staff while they get to know the other bullocks. Perhaps, they’ll even trade war stories.
